Salt Dough

I just made a great batch of salt dough for my kiddos and I to play with. In case you were wondering, salt dough is a great dough that dries, or can be baked, and hardens. You can paint it when it's dry, and really, the possibilities are endless.

Here is the recipe that I followed, found in the book Crafts From Salt Dough, by Audrey Gessat.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup flour
2/3 cup salt
3/4 cup cornstarch
2/3 cup water


Directions:
  • Mix the flour, salt and cornstarch in a salad bowl. The cornstarch gives the dough a better consistency, but if you don't have it, you can add more flour.
  • Mix in the water.
  • Knead the dough for 10 minutes. (take your jewelry off!) The dough should form a firm ball.
Hints and Tricks:
  • To see if you have the right consistency, put a little of it on the table. If it spreads out, add a bit more flour. If it crumbles, add water 1 tablespoon at a time.
  • If you have leftover dough, store it in the fridge in a plastic bag or in a plastic covered dish.
You don't have to cook your dough, it can be air dried, but it takes longer. If you cook the dough, your crafts will be stronger. For best results, it says to cook your creations a day after they've been air drying.

Cooking:
  • Oven temperature 200 degrees F (93 C)
  • Put objects on a cookie sheet or aluminum pie pan
  • Take your crafts out of the oven after 3 hours. Let them cool.
  • Tap the object with a fingernail to make sure it's done. If the sound is light, it is cooked. If the sound is heavy, stick it in the oven a bit longer.
